Third place for Swinkels in final stage Setmana Ciclista Valenciana

Karlijn Swinkels has secured a second podium finish for Team Jumbo-Visma in the final stage of the Setmana Ciclista Valenciana. The 24-year-old rider won the sprint from a reduced peloton in Gandia, only having to hold off breakaway riders Elise Uijen and Justine Ghekiere.

Coryn Labecki was part of a large breakaway that formed halfway through the race. The sixteen leaders gained a two-minute lead, but on the final climb, most of them were caught, including Labecki. Uijen and Ghekiere stayed in front and held on to the lead until the finish line.

Swinkels won the sprint for third place. "I'm disappointed I didn't win the stage, but I'm really happy with my shape. To be the strongest of the remaining peloton in the final means a lot for the spring. To finish the race like this gives an excellent feeling", Swinkels said.

She ran into trouble on the Alto Barx, the final categorised climb, but thanks to the support of teammate Riejanne Markus, she was soon back in the peloton. "Riejanne stayed with me all day and helped me a lot. We made a conscious decision to go uphill at our own pace so that I could still have some explosive power for the final. It worked out well."

Swinkels could only be pleased with her form with regard to the upcoming classics. "We've had a good week together", she said. Team Jumbo-Visma's race coach Carmen Small agreed. "We have had an excellent start to the season. With two third places, a fourth and a seventh place, we were in the top ten every day. The girls are confident and ready for the classics. That's what counts."
