Crash thwarts sprint chances Groenewegen

Dylan Groenewegen hasn’t been able to sprint in the second stage of the Tour de France. A crash at two kilometres from the finish thwarted the sprint chances for the 25-year-old sprinter of Team LottoNL-Jumbo. The resident of Amsterdam stayed on his bike however, but he was unable to battle for the stage victory.

The stage evolved like yesterday, with a traditional early breakaway and a nervous and technical final. Team LottoNL-Jumbo positioned Groenewegen well, but a crash of, amongst others, the yellow jersey, disrupted the sprint.

“A sprint in the Tour is always hectic”, Groenewegen said. “It was a typical Tour sprint. They crashed in the front and I was right behind it. I didn’t crash, but sprinting was no longer an option. My legs felt better than yesterday. They are not super yet, but that will come. The team is good and there are more opportunities yet to come. Things are going in the right direction and that gives us confidence.”
