Groenewegen loses points jersey on final day

Dylan Groenewegen has lost his points jersey in the final stage of the Volta ao Algarve. The resident of Amsterdam, winner of two stages this week, came one point short of stage and overall winner Michal Kwiatkowski to take the red points jersey home.

In the final stage, which started in Faro and finished on the top of the Alto do Malhao, the LottoNL-Jumbo team didn’t play a significant role. However, with Groenewegen’s stage wins, the Tour has been a success.

“Today was an easy day for us”, sports-director Merijn Zeeman said. “We came here for the two sprint stages and with a hundred percent score they worked out well for us: a perfect lead-out, excellent team work and a group of dedicated guys. In today’s stage we just invested in the future and the races yet to come. Our riders also improved their shape. It has been a great week, especially with an eye on the Belgian openingweekend and Paris-Nice.”
