LottoNL-Jumbo unable to stop bunch sprint in Münsterland

Team LottoNL-Jumbo tried, but was unable to prevent a bunch gallop in the Sparkasse Münsterland Giro on Saturday. Tom Boonen (Etixx – Quick Step) took the trophy.

“We didn’t want this race to end up in a bunch sprint,” Sports Director Frans Maasen said after the race. “We were counting on Etixx-Quick Step to be likeminded, but they weren’t. They wanted to go for the sprint, and they did well because Tom Boonen won.

“They had a strong team so that made it even harder to escape with a dangerous group of riders. The race was very closed. Paul Martens tried to bridge the gap to an early breakaway, but didn’t get enough space to do so. So it became a bunch sprint and Sep Vanmarcke did a good job in it. He finished seventh.”
