Wout van Aert was the best ranked Team Jumbo-Visma rider in ninth place, 26 seconds behind winner Julian Alaphilippe. In addition to the white jersey for the best young rider, the Belgian retained his second place in the overall standings, at twenty seconds from Alaphilippe. Steven Kruijswijk and George Bennett are third and fourth.

In the long stage from Binche, a leading group of five riders attacked from the start. They were given a six-minute lead. Team Jumbo-Visma controlled the stage with Tony Martin. In the hilly final, the team was well represented in the front with Kruijswijk, Van Aert, Bennett and Laurens De Plus.

“We knew it was going to be difficult”, Teunissen said. “I was confident beforehand, but I didn’t feel as good as I had hoped. It is a pity that I lost the yellow jersey today. The last few days were very overwhelming and exhausting. Though they were great for the team and myself. This is a lifetime experience which I’ll never forget. From now on, we will focus on the originial goals we came for in this Tour with Dylan and Steven.”

Van Aert was partly disappointed with the result. “When Mike dropped, I knew I had a good chance of taking the yellow jersey. I just had to finish among the best. When Alaphilippe attacked, the race was really on. As a team, we chased behind him, but he was just too strong. It is a pity that I didn’t seize the yellow jersey, especially because I came very close. On the other hand, I cannot be dissatisfied. I am happy that I was able to compete with the best and that I have been able to hold on to the white jersey. The last few days have been great for us as a team. It’s still a long way to Paris and there are more beautiful things to come.”
