Teunissen takes overall lead from Groenewegen in Dunkerque

Mike Teunissen has taken the overall lead from teammate Dylan Groenewegen in the 4 Jours de Dunkerque. In the tough fourth stage with the necessary climbing along the way, Teunissen and Amund Jansen were in the decisive breakaway. The Dutchman eventually sprinted to third place.

With Jansen, Team Jumbo-Visma has a second rider in the top of the GC. The Norwegian climbed to fifth place. After his three consecutive stage wins, Groenewegen retained his point jersey. Team Jumbo-Visma also leads the team classification.

There were continious attacks on the local laps, which contained a steep climb of ten percent. Jansen and Teunissen tried to get away several times, but could not avoid a sprint.

“In the sprint, I got boxed in, so I had to brake. I came back strongly and did a good sprint”, Teunissen explained. “It was a difficult stage. Initially, there was no team to take control in the peloton. When it did, the gap systematically got smaller. On the local laps there were continious attacks and the pace was very high. We stayed together as a team as long as possible. Amund and I were allowed to pursue our own opportunities, while the rest stayed with Dylan in case the stage ended up in a sprint. Eventually, there were two of us in the winning break, so that was good. It is very nice that I am taking over the leader’s jersey. In Amund we have a second rider in the top of the GC. So far, things are going well for us. The team is very strong.”
