Van Poppel fifth in Tour de Pologne’s first stage

Danny van Poppel has finished fifth in the first stage of the Tour de Pologne. The Team Jumbo-Visma rider was brought into a good position by his team for the bunch sprint in Krakow.

The relatively short stage was controlled by the sprinter teams from the start. During the final, a leading group was reeled in. Team Jumbo-Visma took the initiative with Neilson Powless and Taco van der Hoorn going into the final kilometre, after which Van Poppel chose his own way in the final hectometres.

Sports director Addy Engels had seen a combative team. “It was immediately clear that the stage would finish in a sprint. The boys did a good lead-out, especially regarding the fact that these guys don’t do this every day. They came to the front at the right time and Danny was in a good position. That was good to see. It is also a boost of confidence for Danny that he could participate again in the sprints after a not so great spring. The National Championship was already a sign that he is on the way back.”
