Vingegaard claims first pro victory in sixth stage Tour de Pologne

Jonas Vingegaard has achieved his first victory as a professional cyclist. During the sixth stage of the Tour of Pologne he outsprinted Pavel Sivakov and Jai Hindley. The young Danish rider from Team Jumbo-Visma also took the lead in the GC. As a result, he’ll start the final stage in the yellow leader’s jersey.

Together with Antwan Tolhoek, Vingegaard was part of a reduced, front running peloton during the final. The last fifteen kilometres the Danish climber forced the pace. In the sprint he was way ahead of his fellow escapees. Vingegaard awarded Team Jumbo-Visma with the 40th victory of the season. He is the ninth rider in the team of manager Richard Plugge who has taken an individual victory this season.

“It was a very tough stage”, sports director Sierk Jan de Haan said. “We were present in front the entire stage. We communicated well and we showed initiative. With Antwan and Jonas we were able to perform well on the steep climbs. It was no surprise that Jonas went along, because he was one of the strongest men of this stage.”

The winner was very happy with his first victory as a professional. “It still hasn’t sunk in. It’s great. The boys worked well today. When my group returned to the group of Antwan, I still felt good. Therefore, I chose to attack. I knew that I had a good chance in the sprint, but the fact that I managed to finish it off, is fantastic. Tomorrow I will try to defend the jersey. It will be a difficult stage, just like today’s. I dedicate this victory to Bjorg Lambrecht. Cycling is in mourning and it is unreal to lose a colleague like that. This way I honour Bjorg.”
