Pietro Mattio shows himself in Orlen Nations Grand Prix and extends contract

U23 rider Pietro Mattio narrowly missed out on a stage win in the first stage of the Orlen Nations Grand Prix and later won the KOM classification. The 19-year-old Italian recently extended his contract with Team Visma | Lease a Bike Development for another year.

Mattio competed in the Polish Nations Cup race representing the Italian national team. In the opening stage, he broke away to secure second place, ahead of teammate Matthew Brennan, who was racing with the British national team. Mattio also won the KOM classification. This result confirmed the progress the Italian has made since joining Team Visma | Lease a Bike in 2023, leading to his recent one-year contract extension.

“Pietro is truly a team player and plays a very important role in the team process of our Development Team,” said head of development Robbert de Groot. “Additionally, he has developed well. He has great stamina, a strong finishing kick, and all the capabilities needed for a good lead-out. We are happy to keep him with us for a longer period.”

Mattio himself is also excited about his extended stay: “This is the best place for me to further develop myself. Hopefully, I can showcase myself even more in the coming season. I am immensely grateful to the team’s staff for the way they support and help me in all aspects. I look forward to the next year and a half with the team.”
