Team Jumbo-Visma heads to Tirreno without pronounced leader

Team Jumbo-Visma heads to Tirreno without pronounced leader

From 7 to 14 September, Team Jumbo-Visma will be at the start of the Tirreno-Adriatico . The Dutch World Tour team will go to the Italian stage race without a pronounced leader, so that several riders can go for their own chance.

In 2019, Team Jumbo-Visma won the Tirreno-Adriatico with Primoz Roglic. The Slovenian, currently active in the Tour de France, managed to win the final classification due to his performance in the final time trial to San Benedetto del Tronto. In the general classification he left Adam Yates behind by just one second.

Sports director Addy Engels gives every rider of his team equal opportunities in the Tirreno. “We don’t have a real leader for the classification or the sprints. Every day we will analyze the race and see where our chances lie. Based on that assessment, we will make a plan for each stage. This race is also a preparation for the remainder of the season. Conditionally we can take another step towards the Giro d'Italia and the classics.”

"I have worked hard to get back in shape."

Mike Teunissen

For Mike Teunissen it will be his first race after the restart of the cycling season. The 28-year-old rider of Team Jumbo-Visma was sidelined for a while with a knee injury after a crash at altitude training in Tignes. He is now fit enough to start a race. “I am very happy that I’m allowed to race again. I have been looking forward to that for a long time. I have worked hard to get back in shape. For me it is important to race again. Hopefully I will make it through the week well and the Tirreno will be a prelude to the remaining races on the program”, Teunissen said.
