Bouwman wins mountain jersey in Czech Tour

Koen Bouwman has won the mountain classification in the Czech Cycling Tour. The 26-year-old rider of Team Jumbo-Visma gathered enough points for the mountain classification after a long breakaway in the first stage. By doing so he consolidated his lead in the remaining stages. Bouwman also finished seventh in the overall classification. Pascal Eenkhoorn sprinted to fourth place in the final stage and finished eighth overall.

Team Jumbo-Visma rode an aggressive race in the Czech Republic with a mix of World Tour riders and riders from the Development Team. The squad was involved in multiple breakaways with Bouwman and Lars Boven and sprinted to several top ten places with Olav Kooij and Eenkhoorn. The team also finished sixth in the team time trial.

Bouwman: “The biggest goal for this race was that the development riders could learn from us. The mountain jersey was certainly a goal for the team, not so much for me initially. But after the younger guys had not been able to get away in a break in the first stage, I suddenly ended up in the front and gathered enough points to take the jersey. It was still quite difficult to defend it. Especially the past two days as we were racing very fast. We raced full throttle from the beginning. Pascal and I made the split and we both tried to ride a good final. Luckily I was able to collect points here and there because the early breakaway never really got much of a lead. So the mountain jersey is a nice bonus.”
