Brennan concludes Deutschland Tour with second stage victory
Matthew Brennan secured his second stage victory in the final stage of the Deutschland Tour. The 20-year-old Brit was the fastest of a depleted peloton in the streets of Magdeburg. Soren Waerenskjold took the overall win. Brennan and Wout van Aert took fourth and sixth place.
Brennan, who was already the best in Herford earlier this week, was of course satisfied. "The whole team played a big role in this victory. The guys kept me out of trouble all day and did a great job, especially in the final. Matisse Van Kerckhove is only 18 years old, but what he showed in the final today was impressive", said Brennan about the Belgian, who normally raced for the Development Team.
"Niklas Behrens and Wout then took over and brought me comfortably to the finish line. I am delighted that I was able to finish it off. It has been a successful day and week for us." Brennan indicates that everyone had the same goal in mind. "We came here with the goal of winning a stage and ended up winning two. We were all super motivated and when everyone is all-in, a certain cohesion is created. It's great to be able to work with such a group."
"I've been able to develop as a rider again this week."
Brennan secured his eleventh professional victory of the season, bringing the team's season total to 31, just minutes after Jonas Vingegaard's victory in the Vuelta. "It's going really well so far. I've been able to develop as a rider again this week and it's nice to be surrounded by experienced guys like Steven Kruijswijk and Wout. They teach us younger riders a lot. I hope to continue this trend in the Tour of Britain."
