Dumoulin fifth in mountain time trial Tour de Suisse

Tom Dumoulin has finished fifth in the seventh stage of the Tour de Suisse. In the twenty-three kilometre long mountain time trial to Andermatt, the Dutchman clocked a time of 36:58, conceding fifty-six seconds to stage winner Rigoberto Uran.

Sam Oomen dropped one place in the overall standings. He is now in eighth place.

"This makes me happy. It confirms that my level is reasonable."

Dumoulin, whose main goal is the Olympic time trial in Tokyo, was satisfied with his performance. “This makes me happy. It confirms that my level is reasonable. This week I felt like I was getting better by the day. If I’m in top shape, I think I'’ll be fighting for the stage win here. It definitely has to go even better to compete for the medals at the Olympics. My wattages were okay today. We can build on this in the upcoming weeks and it gives me a lot of confidence.”

"I think I lost the most time today in the last kilometre of the climb."

“I think I lost the most time today in the last kilometre of the climb”, Dumoulin continued. “I blew myself up a bit there and I struggled to keep up my pace. I had to recover from that in the first part of the descent and I think I lost some time there too. All in all, the two time trials were successful tests and I am looking forward to the Dutch time trial championship next Wednesday.”
