Fidanza sprints to victory in Trofee Maarten Wynants, Veenhoven third in comeback race

Fidanza sprints to victory in Trofee Maarten Wynants, Veenhoven third in comeback race

Martina Fidanza has won the tenth edition of the Trofee Maarten Wynants. The 25-year-old sprinter from Team Visma | Lease a Bike was the fastest in the bunch sprint after a 116-kilometer race. Nienke Veenhoven, riding her first race since her collarbone fracture in Gent-Wevelgem, took third place.

"A perfect day for the whole team", Fidanza said. "The girls worked hard all day and did everything they could to make it a bunch sprint. The lead-out was also great. In the last 500 meters, four of us were still in front. Nienke dropped me off at 150 meters and then all I had to do was finish it off. I'm super proud of everyone."

For Fidanza, it was her second victory in a week. Seven days ago, she crowned herself winner of Festival Elsy Jacobs in Luxembourg. "The race in Luxembourg was a totally different race than today. Today it was all nervousness in the peloton. Fortunately, we were well in front every time and kept the pace high. I think that was the best tactic."

"Super nice to come back this way."

Nienke Veenhoven

Shortly behind Fidanza, Veenhoven sprinted to third place. The 21-year-old rider made her comeback in Trofee Maarten Wynants after suffering a collarbone fracture in Gent-Wevelgem. “It's super nice to come back this way,” Veenhoven said. "The plan was to sprint with Martina today and we executed that plan perfectly as a team. It was a super nice lead-out."

Veenhoven is happy that she was able to compete for prizes again in her first race. "I knew I would be good, but still it always takes some getting used to in such a peloton. Besides, it was a super hectic race. It was just not tough enough to thin out the peloton, so it remained a big peloton. All in all, it was a nice race to get into."
