Fisher-Black also takes New Zealand’s U23 road title

Finn Fisher-Black is the new New Zealand road race champion U23. It is the second national title for the eighteen-year-old rider of the Jumbo-Visma Development Team, after having won the national time trial title last Friday.

The U23 competed in a joint course with the elite for the national title. After more than a hundred and seventy kilometres of racing, Fisher-Black was the first U23 rider to cross the line. It is the second win of the season for Fisher-Black and also the second win for the Jumbo-Visma Development Team. George Bennett finished second in the elite category after a brave solo.

“I had a very good day”, Fisher-Black said. “George and I rode a strong race. It’s a shame he couldn’t finish it, because he was so close. I would have preferred we both went home with the victory. This title means a lot to me and I am happy that I have been able to take the win.”

Bennett had seemed to be on his way to victory for a long time, but was caught in the final stages. “This title is very special for a New Zealander so everyone wants to win it. I gave everything, but in the end it wasn’t good enough. When Shane Archbold came to me, I knew it was done. The legs were gone.”
