After the early breakaway was reeled in in the last three kilometres, Team Jumbo-Visma brought their team leader Mike Teunissen in position. In the technical last two kilometres, Teunissen lost his position, after which he had to start his sprint from too far.

“It was a very dangerous stage”, Teunissen said. “The course was very technical and the wet conditions also played a major role. I was well-positioned in the dangerous and narrow final, but I lost the wheel of the guys, after which I had to come from too far. ”

Sports director Arthur van Dongen was happy that his team made it through the stage unscathed. “It was a hectic final. Very narrow and lots of turns. Luckily, we had seen the last kilometres often enough during all the previous laps. The intention was to sprint with Mike. He was positioned well, but the guys lost each other a bit in the final. Due to the nature of the course, it was difficult to regroup again afterwards. There was no space to move up. That’s a pity. We had hoped for more.”

The BinckBank Tour will continue tomorrow with a time trial of just over eight kilometres in Riemst. Van Dongen is already looking forward to the race against the clock. “Mike is still fifth in the overall standings. That’s a good starting point. The climb in tomorrow’s time trial will certainly make for some time differences.”
