In sunny conditions, the peloton left Vitoria-Gasteiz for a 133-kilometre ride towards Amurrio. On the second categorised climb, the peloton broke up, although there were Jumbo-Visma riders in the front group.

On the steep Wall of Lezama, five riders escaped and opened up a small gap. However, the quintet did not work well together, and a chase group with Kraak joined them. The Dutchwoman had to admit she was no match for Vollering in the final sprint, who took her second win.

"The final didn't quite go according to plan", race coach Carmen Small said. "We had hoped to get Karlijn (Swinkels) into the front group so she could sprint for the win. Although the gap at the top was a few seconds, unfortunately, we couldn't bring her back."

Despite the disappointment, Small saw some positives. "We had everything under control until the final climb, and as a team, we were in the front throughout. Furthermore, Amber rode in the top ten again in a World Tour race, although I think she could have done better. Tomorrow I expect a very open race where we will be aggressive and hope to take our chances."
