Markus finishes fourth in Vuelta Femenina, Vos wins points classification

Riejanne Markus has finished seventh in the final stage of the Vuelta Femenina. The rider of Team Jumbo-Visma Women finished fourth in the general classification, just off the podium. Marianne Vos won the points classification.

The short final stage of just over ninety kilometres was undoubtedly difficult. The peloton first had to climb the Collado Moandi before finishing on the Lagos de Covadonga, a climb of the horse category. On the first climb, the peloton thinned out after a few accelerations. "We crossed it really well", Markus said. "It was quite hard to ride. Luckily I had Marianne, Amber and Anna with me. That was good."

"Of course, it's disappointing that I didn't make it onto the podium, but nevertheless I am overjoyed with this week"

Riejanne Markus

The Dutch rider had to let go of the top favourites on the final climb and ended just off the podium in the final classification. "I rode as fast as I could in the end. Of course, it's disappointing that I didn't make it onto the podium. Going into this grand tour, my goal was to finish in the top five in the general classification, but of course, I would have liked to keep third place. Nevertheless, I am overjoyed with this week", a proud Markus said.

Vos did not see her significant lead in the points classification jeopardised. This makes her the first rider to win the points classification in all three grand tours. "It was a really great week. We won the team time trial, claimed two stage victories, took home the green jersey, and Riejanne placed fourth overall", Vos said. "It was my first Vuelta. I really enjoyed it."
