Strong Kraak sprints to second place in Grand Prix de Plouay

Amber Kraak has just missed out on winning the Grand Prix de Plouay. After a gruelling race, the 28-year-old rider of Team Jumbo-Visma had to acknowledge her superior in Mavi Garcia, who won in a sprint-à-deux.

Linda Riedmann represented Team Jumbo-Visma in a large breakaway group, but the attackers did not get much space from the peloton. At about thirty kilometers from the finish line, the peloton caught the fifteen fugitives, and then Kraak attacked. The former rowing athlete and mountain classification winner in the Tour of Scandinavia accelerated and caused a shift in the peloton.

Fourteen riders remained at the front and Kraak was frequently in the lead. She was the only rider who could follow when Garcia, a Spanish rider, attacked in the last kilometre. The two riders caught up with the rest of the group and battled for victory. However, Kraak was unable to beat Garcia in the final metres. Garcia crossed the finish line one-half of a wheel ahead of her.

"I can come to terms with the second place, a very nice result”, Kraak said. "For me, it was one of the first finals in which I could participate, and it went very well. Due to my lack of experience I didn't play the game well. I didn't dare look back because I was afraid the group would come back. Next time I will make it a bit harder for Garcia at the finish line."

Kraak spoke of a challenging but memorable day. "For the first time I was able to save some energy at the beginning of the race. Linda was in the initial breakout, but it was caught thanks to the pursuing efforts of FDJ and Canyon. Linda did a nice lead out at the bottom of the climb. Then I attacked and ended up in the leading group. I felt fresh on the climbs and worked hard to keep the breakaway going."
