Strong Markus solo to victory in Navarra Women's Elite Classic

Strong Markus solo to victory in Navarra Women's Elite Classic

Riejanne Markus has won the Navarra Women's Elite Classic. The Dutch champion left her escape companions behind with ten kilometres to go. Karlijn Swinkels finished an excellent fifth. Markus' victory is the fourth win for Team Jumbo-Visma on Spanish soil in ten days.

Four days after a successful Vuelta Femenina, in which Team Jumbo-Visma Women won three stages and the points jersey with Marianne Vos, the third edition of the elite women's classic in Navarra was on the programme. The peloton covered 135 kilometres in northern Spain, including several steep climbs. Markus, who finished fourth in the last Vuelta, was the favourite for the Spanish one-day race.

A strong Swinkels was part of a large breakaway that formed after the first climb of the day. Meanwhile, Markus rode a watchful race in the chase group. In the final, the gap between the two leaders narrowed, and the two groups merged. "The fact that Karlijn was in the lead group at the beginning of the race was a perfect situation for us", Markus said. "The other teams had to close the gap to the front. And that's what they did."

"Proud that I was able to ride solo to the finish"

Markus eventually proved the strongest on the Muro de Galar, a short climb with gradients of up to 21 percent, ten kilometres from the finish. "I knew there was a chance I could put the others in trouble, so I decided to go for it. In the end, I was alone on the steep part. I am very proud that I was able to ride solo to the finish", the winner said.

Sports director Carmen Small saw how her team kept the momentum going. "It's nice to see that after the Vuelta, we have kept the winning mood. It was a strong performance today. The women rode very well. The selection was a mix of experienced and less experienced riders. They stuck to the plan, and they sacrificed themselves for each other. That way, Riejanne was always in an ideal position. I am very proud."
