Team Jumbo-Visma takes no risks in final stage of Tour de Pologne

The final stage of the Tour de Pologne also ended in a mass sprint. Team Jumbo-Visma stayed in the background after sprinter Olav Kooij's departure. Tosh Van der Sande sprinted to 13th place. The win went to Tim Merlier.

The seventh and final stage of the Tour de Pologne took the peloton from Zabrze to Krakow. The peloton stayed together for a long time. It was not until eighty kilometres into the stage that three escapees gained a one-minute advantage. Their attack lasted about sixty kilometres. The peloton prepared for another mass sprint, and Merlier was the fastest. Van der Sande was the first Jumbo-Visma rider to cross the line. He finished 13th.

Sports director Maarten Wynants looked back on a successful week on Polish soil. "We came here to get a stage win with Olav. He won stage four after finishing second in the opening stage, so our goal was achieved. In stage five, we also hoped to win the sprint, but it was just too tough. In retrospect, it was a great opportunity, but we can't win every day.”

"For the GC, we wanted to try Tobias (Foss) and Koen (Bouwman). But after the second and third stages, it became clear that we could forget about the GC”, Wynants continued. Sam Oomen was the best-placed rider for Team Jumbo-Visma in 26th place. "After that, Tobias wanted to do a good time trial. His ninth place was okay. He can look forward to the World time trial Championships in Glasgow with confidence”, the Belgian concluded.
