Team Visma | Lease a Bike misses out on top result in neutralised third stage of Tour de Pologne

For Team Visma | Lease a Bike, the third stage of the Tour de Pologne did not turn out as hoped. In the 159-kilometre stage to Walbrzych, which was temporarily neutralised due to a crash, Matthew Brennan was unable to get involved in the battle for the stage win.

In the third stage of the Polish stage race, the riders faced seven categorised climbs. After the breakaway riders had been caught, the peloton was disrupted by a serious crash with 20 kilometres to go. Due to a lack of ambulances, the organisers were forced to temporarily suspend the race.

After a fifteen-minute delay, the race resumed and the riders who had been dropped were able to return. Menno Huising and Attila Valter rode at the front of the peloton and tried to get Brennan to the finish line in a comfortable position. The young Brit, who is celebrating his twentieth birthday today, got boxed in during the sprint and could not finish higher than 27th place.

"Everything looked perfect. Matthew and I were still in a good position."

Menno Huising

Huising has mixed feelings about this day. "Everything looked perfect. It was a very tough stage and Matthew and I were still in a good position. If we survived one more climb, I could support Matthew to fight for the stage win. Unfortunately, a serious crash occured. Let me start by saying that I think it was the right decision to neutralise the race, because safety comes first", the young Dutchman said.

"The only unfortunate thing is that a group of about thirty riders were able to return to the peloton, even though they had already been dropped. We had pushed hard to get there, and they got back “for free”. Ultimately, we were the ones who suffered as a result. It's very disappointing right now, but all in all, we can be satisfied that we were in such a small group as two neopros."
