Teunissen finishes in eighth place overall in BinckBank Tour

Teunissen finishes in eighth place overall in BinckBank Tour

Mike Teunissen has finished in eighth place overall in the BinckBank Tour. The leader of Team Jumbo-Visma came a little short in the final of the final stage to Geraardsbergen and finished in fifteenth place in the stage.

The final stage, with four times the Kapelmuur along the way, was characterised by an early breakaway with Bert-Jan Lindeman on behalf of Team Jumbo-Visma. After Lindeman had been caught, Teunissen was kept in the front of the peloton by his team as good as possible. Teunissen tried to join the chasing group, but did not get away.

“To be honest, today was a bit disappointing”, Teunissen said. “I wanted more, but I wasn’t able to join the chasing group behind Mathieu van der Poel. Although I still tried. This week was above all a very good stimulus towards the upcoming classics. I can only hope that things will get even better for me in the coming weeks. After my knee injury, I have only been back in competition for a month. So it isn’t going that bad either.”

Sports director Arthur van Dongen looked back on the past week with a good feeling. “We mainly wanted to use this race to improve towards the classics. The plan was to join the early breakaway today. That worked out with Bert-Jan. Then we tried to keep Mike in the front as well as we could. Mike fought for it all the way, but he just came a little short to really fight for a good result. All in all, the team has done well all week and this race was an absolute investment for the upcoming weeks. The guys seem to be ready to support Wout in the classics.”
