Vingegaard eighth in Clásica San Sebastián

Vingegaard eighth in Clásica San Sebastián

Jonas Vingegaard has finished eighth in the Clásica San Sebastián. The runner-up of the Tour de France crossed the line in the first chasing group. They stranded just over a minute from a leading group of four that sprinted for victory.

Team Jumbo-Visma rode a strong race in a soaking wet Klasikoa. The team was very active. Partly due to the work of Nathan Van Hooydonck, the early breakaway was reeled in. In the end, four riders escaped and stayed ahead. Vingegaard was supported by Sam Oomen in the final, but a place of honour was the highest achievable today.

“It’s my first race after the Tour de France”, Vingegaard said. “I am happy to be able to race again. We rode a strong race as a team. Of course I had hoped for more, but today I couldn’t get more than an eighth place. In one of the descents they went full throttle, which caused gaps on the wet road surface. Unfortunately we were not able to get back on anymore. I tried my best. Eighth is not a bad result. I’m glad I’m still in good shape.”
