Attacking Markus wins final stage Tour de Romandie Féminin

Riejanne Markus impressively won the final stage of the Tour de Romandie Féminin. The Dutch rider chose to attack together with Niamh Fisher-Black at 60 kilometers before the line and managed to stay out of the peloton's hands. In a sprint-à-deux, Markus proved to be the strongest.

In the final stage of the Swiss stage race, the yellow-black formation immediately showed its attacking intentions. Mijntje Geurts tried, but no real breakaway got off the ground. Then it was Markus who took the lead together with Fisher-Black. The two riders created a four-minute gap and then were unreachable by the peloton. Markus, who had been riding very strongly throughout the stage, proved to have the best legs in the streets of Morges.

"This victory makes me very happy"

“This victory makes me very happy,” Markus said after the race. “I knew there were chances on this hilly course and that with my gap in the general classification, there were opportunities to get in the breakaway. I felt strong all day today, and then it's very nice that I can finish it in the end.”

Markus did not have a flawless preparation for the Swiss WorldTour stage race due to illness. “The Tour de France Femmes did not turn out the way I had hoped. In addition, I also fell sick. That I then finally get to triumph here gives me a lot of confidence. I notice that I am getting better and better. Wednesday, at the European Time Trial Championships, I hope to be able to compete with the best again for a good classification,” Markus concludes.
