Groenewegen leaves BinckBank Tour without stage win

Groenewegen leaves BinckBank Tour without stage win

Dylan Groenewegen has not been able to sprint in the fifth stage of the BinckBank Tour. In the chaotic final kilometre, his lead-out train did not get on track and the Dutchman had to come from too far. He finished seventh.

The early breakaway was reeled in in the last three kilometres. Groenewegen pursued his own way in the last kilometre, but did not manage to escape the chaos.

“Since my crash in the Tour, I no longer feel fully fit”, Groenewegen told the newspaper De Telegraaf. “I am happy that I was able to win a stage in France. It was a demolishing Tour. I’m used to sprint freely in the last three hundred metres and doing my thing. That doesn’t work in the BinckBank Tour if you are not feeling totally fit, although I got close to a stage win two days ago. I am now going to recover in Spain and prepare for the last part of the season, starting with the Tour of Britain.”

Groenewegen will no longer start in tomorrow’s individual time trial in The Hague.
