Jansen's attempt stranded close to finish in Tour of Britain's seventh stage

Jansen's attempt stranded close to finish in Tour of Britain's seventh stage

A courageous attack by Amund Grøndahl Jansen in the final of the seventh stage of the Tour of Britain has stranded in the final three hundred metres of the stage. The Norwegian champion accelerated into the final kilometre, but was caught on the steep final slope in Burton Dassett. He eventually finished in tenth place.

Little changed in the overall standings. Mike Teunissen remains seventh, Jansen tenth. They were kept in the front by the team throughout the stage.

After the early breakaway was reeled in, the race split apart on the local lap through the national park in Burton Dassett. Jansen attacked with four others in the final kilometres, after which he left them as they entered the final kilometre. Jansen could not quite keep his speed on the steep slopes to the finish. The stage was won by overall leader Mathieu van der Poel.

"It was my plan to attack in the final local lap," Jansen explained. “You have more chance to succeed if all the domestic riders are gone in the chase. I was in a very good group and we worked really well together. When I attacked in the last kilometre, I thought I could win. We had a nice gap to the peloton at the time. Unfortunately I didn't succeed because the peloton was still led by teams other than the teams of the GC riders."
