Leader Roglic unscathed through Vuelta’s crash-marred fourteenth stage

Primoz Roglic has passed the fourteenth stage of the Vuelta a España unscathed. The Slovenian had to put a foot on the ground in a massive crash in the final kilometre of today's stage, but did not crash himself. He retains his overall lead.

In the nervous stage to Oviedo a breakaway was given a free pass soon after the start. As it was one of the few remaining sprinter stages, the sprinters’ teams quickly started to chase. Eventually, everything came back together in the final, after which a massive crash marred the sprint when entering the final kilometre. Team Jumbo-Visma and Roglic came unscathed through the crash and finished the stage without problems.

"It was a very nervous and fast final," Roglic said. “Luckily I did not crash myself and made it to the finish in one piece. All in all, it was a good day for me and the team. It certainly wasn't a day to recover at that speed. The team has done a good job again today by keeping me out of the danger zone. Although we try to do that every day but crashes like this can happen and you always have to pay attention. ”

With two more tough mountain stages to come before the second rest day, Roglic looks ahead to tomorrow and the day after tomorrow. “I expect attacks from the start. It’s going to be two tough days. Not only because of the two final climbs, but also because of all those climbs before that. We have to continue to rely on our own strength and go from there."
