LottoNL-Jumbo miss out in the last classic of the spring

In the last classic of the 2017 spring campaign, the LottoNL-Jumbo men were unable to land a major result after a hard, selective race saw Alejandro Valverde win for a fourth time. Antwan Tolhoek was LottoNL-Jumbo’s best rider, finishing 40th place, with Floris de Tier close behind in 42nd.

LottoNL-Jumbo started the day without a designated leader in La Doyenne. Early in the race a break of eight riders formed but LottoNL-Jumbo opted not to be part of it.

After a steady chase, the Redoute climb again marked the start of the finale of the race and LottoNL-Jumbo had three men in the front peloton. Unfortunately Saint Nicolas saw the race explode and our riders were not there. Antwan Tolhoek chased hard to finish in 40th place in Ans.

Young Tolhoek steps upfront 2016

Tolhoek: "You can see that I have just taken a nice step from last year. We start here without a clear leader and so it's hard to join the big attack, especially if you look at the quality of the riders up there.”

“I would have liked to show myself between the Redoute and the Roche-aux-Faucons but in the end I was very happy with my progression and hope to continue improving. Now I'm going to rest for a while and then on Tuesday it’s time for the Tour de Romandie.”

Verhoeven is realistic

Sports director Nico Verhoeven was realistic after the race: “We have tried to ride the finale with Floris de Tier and Antwan Tolhoek. Unfortunately that did not work because it turned out to be too difficult a race.”

“We know it will be difficult this year to compete in the hardest classics and so we chose to invest in the future with this young team. With that in mind, they did very well. In the coming years, we hope to take advantage of their talent, we can’t expect more from these guys at the moment.”
