Wynants in the attack in final stage Tour of Norway

Maarten Wynants has shown himself well in the front during the final stage of the Tour of Norway. The 37-year-old rider from Team Jumbo-Visma was part of a leading group of six, but was caught on the last climb of the day. Floris De Tier finished seventeenth in the general classification.

After the breakaway was caught on the climb to Smeden, De Tier left the peloton just before the top of the climb. Everything came together in the last ten kilometres. In the following sprint, De Tier was unable to compete for the stage win.

“We fought to the best of our abilities”, sports director Frans Maassen said. “It was good that Maarten was in the breakaway. They didn’t get as far as we had hoped, because the peloton rode very fast. Taco and Bert-Jan dropped off Floris well on the foot of the last climb. Floris came up in a good position, but his group was caught quickly. This stage resulted in a sprint again. It’s difficult to have success in this kind of stage without Van Poppel. Nevertheless, the boys have done what they could this week. Every day, we tried to be in the breakaway and we succeeded three times.”
