The Athlete’s FoodCoach fueled the team over the last finish line

The Athlete’s FoodCoach fueled the team over the last finish line

The Tour de France. 21 stages, more than 3,500 kilometers, brutal mountain climbs, and unpredictable weather. For the riders to perform at the highest level day after day requires far more than strong legs and tactical brilliance. It demands precision fuel delivered at the right time, in the right form.

Just as in previous years, The Athlete’s FoodCoach was embedded with the team from the Grand Départ all the way to Paris, ensuring every rider had the energy, hydration, and recovery support needed to fight for success until the very end. The results spoke for themselves: two outstanding stage wins, a victory as best team in the overall team classification and Jonas Vingegaard securing second place on the podium in Paris. Achievements made possible by teamwork in every sense of the word.

The daily strategy of energy management

Every stage of the Tour is a unique challenge in energy control. On flat stages, the focus is on preserving glycogen stores for decisive sprints. In the mountains, riders tackle sustained, high-intensity efforts that demand maximum carbohydrate intake. And in time trials, the fueling plan shifts to fast-absorbing carbs to deliver maximum power without weighing the stomach down. No two stages are alike, and neither is the nutrition strategy.

"I like that our menu has so much variety! You won't find the same thing served on multiple days"

Jonas Vingegaard

More than just calories

Each day, The Athlete’s FoodCoach program adapted the plan to meet the demands of the route, the weather, and the rider’s condition. At the elite level, the smallest details make the biggest difference. Nutrition is not simply about providing energy, it’s about delivering the right kind of energy at the right moment. That means:

  • Tuning meals to match the day’s stage profile, weather conditions and personal needs
  • Adjusting hydration for heatwaves, mountain altitudes and wet or cold days
  • Timing fuel intake to prevent riders from dipping into the dreaded “red zone”
  • Strategizing recovery to speed up muscle repair and glycogen replenishment for next day’s stage

Every rider is different, with unique needs, preferences, and tolerances. By fine-tuning macronutrient ratios, micronutrient intake, and even flavor profiles, the team’s morale stayed as high as their performance.

Behind the scenes: kitchen on wheels

Following the peloton from start to finish is our very own kitchen truck, a fully equipped, state-of-the-art kitchen that travels to every hotel along the Tour route. It’s the beating heart of our fueling operation, ensuring riders get consistent, high-quality meals no matter where the stage ends. Each morning, before the sun was up, our chefs were already hard at work. The day begins with early breakfast preparation, carefully tailored to the stage ahead. From carb-rich options for mountain slogs to lighter fare for time trials.

But the work doesn’t stop there. The kitchen crew’s day stretches over 12+ hours, providing a seamless flow of meals: pre-race snacks, recovery meals, dinners, and even evening snacks to keep glycogen stores topped up and support optimal recocery. By the end of the tour, the team has produced 120+ prepped meals, each one calculated for the rider’s needs down to the gram. The kitchen truck doesn’t just deliver food; it delivers performance, stage after stage, until Paris.

Fueled to perform

As the sun set over the Champs-Élysées and the cheers of Paris filled the air, the sense of pride within Team Visma | Lease a Bike was undeniable. Jonas stood on the podium, the team claimed the title of best team in the Tour, and every rider, staff member, and chef knew they had given everything. For The Athlete’s FoodCoach, it was more than just fueling a race. It was fueling a shared dream, stage after stage, meal after meal. This was a Tour fought with heart, powered by dedication, and carried all the way to the finish line. And as we look ahead, one thing is certain: we’ll be ready to fuel the next victory.
