Fan Peloton talk: 'It’s lovely to see that everyone is rooting for each other'

In our column ‘Fan Peloton talk’, we put members of the Fan Peloton in the spotlight. Who are they, why do they feel connected to Team Visma | Lease a Bike and who is their favourite rider? In this episode, we have a chat with Stefan Van Hee.

What made you decide to join the Team Visma | Lease a Bike Fan Peloton?
"Like many Belgians, I’m a huge fan of Wout van Aert. When I saw that you could sign up for the Fan Peloton, I didn’t need to think twice. I must admit that the story of the past also really resonated with me. I’ve read the book ‘Het Plan’ twice now, and it’s made me realise just how special what Team Visma | Lease a Bike has achieved is. I find it admirable that they’ve grown into one of the best teams in the world."

Can you name a few things that appeal to you as a fan?
"As a recreational cyclist, it’s always handy to get some cycling tips from the team. For me, it’s mainly the behind-the-scenes insight that really appeals to me. I get the feeling that there aren’t many other teams that give their fans and members the same insight. I’m a cycling fan through and through. I love being able to follow the team up close and be part of the team."

What do you enjoy most about being a member?
"I find it hard to pick just one thing. I read almost all the interviews that appear on the website, watch all the behind-the-scenes content and documentaries. I also look forward with excitement every month to the results of the lottery, hoping that something will come up one day. The whole package just works, and that’s the most important thing for me."

"I really hope that one day Wout will be able to tick off the two major goals he still has."

Have you ever been to an event before?
"No, I haven’t had the chance yet. A visit to the High Performance Center in 's-Hertogenbosch certainly appeals to me. I’ll try to attend an event sometime in the future."

How would you describe Team Visma | Lease a Bike in a few sentences?
"Team Visma | Lease a Bike strikes me as a well-organised team that achieves great success thanks to a solid structure and a clear way of working. I love seeing that everyone supports one another. That’s one of the reasons why I’m such a fan of Wout. Given his track record, he could easily say: ‘I’m riding for myself’, but during the Tour or another Grand Tour, he sacrifices himself for his team leader. That interplay is what makes the team so strong and great."

Who is your favourite cyclist on the team?
"Wout, closely followed by Victor Campenaerts. I really hope that one day Wout can tick off the two major goals he still has. He’s had so much bad luck; it would be absolutely brilliant if things finally went his way. Victor has gained a huge following thanks to the engaging vlogs he makes. Someone else who really appeals to me is Bart Lemmen. I’ve been following him ever since he joined the team. Because of his background in the military, I’m always curious to see how he gets on.”

Suppose you could ask these riders anything. What would you want to know?
"I wonder if you can become a successful professional cyclist even if you don’t have natural talent. What is it that makes one rider better than another?"

Do you cycle often yourself?
"I always try to set myself a few goals at the start of the year. If I’m not injured, I try to cycle two or three times a week. I sometimes cycle as much as 10,000 kilometers in a year. It keeps me fit and healthy. In recent years, I’ve cycled the Amstel Gold Race with my friends. We make a fun weekend of it. I’ve also cycled the routes of the Tour of Flanders, Liège–Bastogne–Liège, the Flèche Wallonne and Paris–Roubaix."

What would make the membership even better for you?
"Compared to when it first started, a lot has been added. One nice extra I’d like to see is a game where we Fan Peloton members can make predictions and possibly win a prize."
