Dutch cycling teams and riders sign collective labor agreement

The Dutch Association of Cycling Teams and the Association of Professional Cyclists (VVBW) have reached an agreement on a new collective labor agreement (CLA) for professional riders. The CLA includes, among other things, extended salary continuation in the event of illness or injury. The CLA for professional cyclists of Dutch WorldTour teams will be in effect from 2025 through 2028 and applies to all professional riders of the two Dutch professional cycling teams: Team Visma | Lease a Bike and Team Picnic PostNL.

“This agreement marks another step in the professionalization of Dutch cycling,” said Richard Plugge, CEO of Team Visma | Lease a Bike. “We’re pleased that, as employers and employees, we’ve come together on this new CLA. As an employer in a highly competitive and international environment, we believe it’s important to have a solid foundation laid out for our riders.”

Daan Hermes, chairman of the VVBW, calls it a historic step. “After eight years without a CLA, legal certainty has finally returned to the peloton.” According to Hermes, the agreement sends a strong signal that riders also have the right to protection. He also expressed appreciation for the way in which the CLA was established, emphasizing the constructive attitude of both riders and teams that led to this positive outcome.

“This CLA is another valuable addition to the high level of professionalism of Dutch based professional cycling at the highest level”, agrees Iwan Spekenbrink, CEO of Team Picnic PostNL. “It is positive for both the riders and their teams in the Netherland as, amongst others, it makes the Dutch specifics fit well with the standards and reality of our international sport.”

The Royal Dutch Cycling Union (KNWU) is also pleased with the agreement. “This is an important step for the future of cycling,” said Maurice Leeser.
