Van Kerckhove wins overall classification at Flèche du Sud, Brennan sprints to third stage victory
Team Visma | Lease a Bike can look back on a particularly successful edition of the Flèche du Sud. The Dutch team dominated the five-day race in Luxembourg with four stage wins and the overall victory for Matisse Van Kerckhove, who also won the young rider classification. Matthew Brennan claimed his third stage win today, thereby also securing the points classification.
"It’s absolutely brilliant to win a general classification at pro level for the first time in my career. The fact that I managed to do it as a Devo rider makes it even more special", said Van Kerckhove, who will be moving to the WorldTeam of Team Visma | Lease a Bike next season. "I’m incredibly grateful to everyone for this week. The team has done a fantastic job."
As the winner of the tough third stage, Van Kerckhove went into the final stage with a five-second lead. This consisted of eight local laps of twenty kilometres, with a short but tough climb in each lap. Team Visma | Lease a Bike took control of the peloton and ensured the breakaway riders never got too much space.
"On paper, it looked like an easy stage, but I didn’t find it that easy. There was a constant crosswind, which made it hard work to stay on the wheel of the rider in front", said the young Belgian. With three kilometres to go, the gap to the leading group was still twenty seconds, forcing the yellow-and-black team to pull out all the stops to close the gap. They eventually succeeded on the final climb.
Brennan was guided to the front in a frantic finale and then finished it off convincingly. "It feels good to win here for the third time, but I’m also very happy for Matisse. He’s won a stage race among the pros for the first time in his career", Brennan compliments his younger teammate. "We did it perfectly as a team. Everyone stuck to the plan and gave it their all. It’s wonderful that I was able to finish it off in the end. This is a step in the right direction and towards the bigger goals that lie ahead."
"Everyone was watching us because we had the best team at the start."
With four stage wins, the overall victory and the youth and points classifications, Team Visma | Lease a Bike can look back on a highly successful week in Luxembourg. Sports director Gaëtan Pons was delighted with his team’s performance. "I’m very proud of the way we’ve performed here. Everyone was watching us because we had the best team at the start. Of course, you feel a bit of pressure to get everything right, but I think we can safely say we were by far the strongest team. We’re very pleased."
