Nooijen wraps up season with overall victory at Eneco Tour
Lieke Nooijen has capped off a strong week of racing at the Eneco Tour by securing the overall victory. The 25-year-old Team Visma | Lease a Bike rider successfully defended her lead in the general classification on the final stage. In addition to the orange leader's jersey, Nooijen also took home the blue points jersey.
"I'm really happy. Ending the season like this is everything you could dream of. Now I can enjoy my offseason even more", a delighted Nooijen said. "Winning the general classification means a lot to me. The girls had a lot of confidence in me, and I had just as much confidence in them. We're definitely going to celebrate this victory together."
Nooijen entered the final stage with a 38-second advantage in the general classification. That margin ultimately proved more than enough to secure the leader's jersey. Despite several attacks from the SD Worx riders, Nooijen held firm with the support of her teammates, ensuring her overall victory was never seriously threatened.
"I'm incredibly proud of this team. We've all worked so hard, and we more than deserve this victory", Nooijen said. "I had a solid lead in the general classification, so I knew I was in a good position. Still, you have to stay alert and race actively. You want to stay out of trouble if something happens and make sure you're near the front throughout the stage. We did a really good job of that as a team. I want to thank the entire team for everything this week."
With two stage wins, in the prologue and time trial, as well as victories in two classifications, Nooijen can look back on a successful week of racing. "I'm happy I was able to deliver as the team leader this week. I've worked incredibly hard over the past year and put a lot of effort into improving as a rider. It's great to see all that hard work paying off this season."
