Foss comes up just short of winning prologue in Tour de Romandie

Tobias Foss has raced to second place in the prologue of the Tour de Romandie. The Team Jumbo-Visma time trial world champion came less than a second short. Czech Josef Cerny took the victory.

In Port-Valais, on the shores of Lake Geneva, the riders worked through a short prologue of almost seven kilometres. Team Jumbo-Visma aimed for a top result with the Norwegian Foss. The time trial specialist seemed to be on his way to victory for a long time. At the finish he realised that he was less than a second slower than the eventual winner.

Foss: "I found a good rhythm, and it went well on the road. I was coached well from the car and gave everything, but someone was just a tiny bit quicker. To miss out on victory this way is never fun, but I'm pleased with how my legs felt."

"I intend to improve my form in preparation for the Giro and perform my part well."

The Norwegian particularly looked ahead to the Giro d'Italia, which starts in less than two weeks. He will be an important rider for Team Jumbo-Visma in the Italian stage race. "I intend to improve my form in preparation for the Giro and perform my part well. So my ambitions for this week are still modest. We will see how my form is. Also because I've also been a bit sick. Although this second place does give confidence."

Sports director Merijn Zeeman: "A second place is always the most thankless place. Especially when the difference is so small. Tobias rode a strong prologue, demonstrating that his form is sound with an eye towards the Giro. This also gives confidence for the time trial scheduled later this week, in which he can show his rainbow jersey again."
