Gloag reaffirms his abilities, while Kooij doesn't get to sprint in Gran Piemonte

Tom Gloag once more distinguished himself in his third race for Team Jumbo-Visma. The 21-year-old Englishman was in the lead on the Pilonetto in Gran Piemonte, joined the front group, and eventually raced on the flat course to a respectable twelfth place.

On Il Pilonetto, the challenging climb halfway the race, sports director Frans Maassen noticed a gap opening up. Olav Kooij and several sprinters dropped out of the peloton, unable to keep up with the pace. “The race exploded on the climb. We agreed that Tom would try to stay there with the best and he did it well. The rest stayed with Olav. Unfortunately, the group at the front kept getting bigger, with more teams willing to ride. In the descent, we ended up in a nice group with Olav and we did everything we could to get back in the first group. We bridged a two-minute gap in just over thirty seconds. Unfortunately, it didn't work out”, Maassen said.

"Tom rode these three races in Italy exceptionally well"

sports director Frans Maassen

The sports director was ecstatic with trainee Tom Gloag's performance. This week, the British cyclist competed in his first three one-day races in Italy for Team Jumbo-Visma. “He rode these three races exceptionally well. It's a shame that someone bumped into his derailleur in the final because otherwise, he would have finished in a better position. We did a good job scouting Tom and I'm sure we will see a lot more of him."
