Henderson fourth in opening stage Lotto Thüringen Ladies Tour

Anna Henderson has finished just outside the podium in the opening stage of the Lotto Thüringen Ladies Tour. The British rider finished fourth, one second behind winner Emma Norsgaard. Romy Kasper finished in twelfth place.

Team Jumbo-Visma Women started with five riders in the German stage race. The opening stage of 89 kilometres had a fast and fierce start. After 35 kilometres the first breakaway group emerged, of which Henderson was a member. The breakaway got room to extend the lead to one minute. About twenty kilometres before the finish Kasper and six other riders joined the leading group after which the pace was increased further. Henderson fell just short of victory in the final.

"I let go in the final because of my positioning, but I am happy with the fourth place."

“The pace was very high from the start”, Henderson said. “Luckily I was in a good position on the first climb, so I was able to be part of the breakaway. The peloton had a hard time catching us, also thanks to the work of our team. Romy was able to help me a lot in the final stage. I let go in the final because of my positioning, but I am happy with the fourth place. The team worked well today but we hope to get even better results this week.”

Race coach Lieselot Decroix looked back positively on the first race. “We had a very good race today. Anna managed to go with the first breakaway. There were many strong riders among them. Romy joined the leading group in the last lap and they worked really well together in the final. Anna went downhill towards the finish with a lot of guts. However, she didn’t manage to get a good position in the last corners, so she ended up in fourth place. All in all it was a great race for the team. We are also happy that Jip van den Bos and Aafke Soet were able to ride their first race kilometres again.”
