Narrow escape Team Jumbo-Visma in twelfth stage Vuelta

Team Jumbo-Visma has emerged unharmed in the twelfth stage of the Vuelta a Espana. Several riders of the Dutch team, including leader Primoz Roglic, were involved in a crash in the stage to Córdoba, but they all could continue their way. Roglic maintained his third place in the general classification.

The first part of the stage went downhill; a leading group was formed after 80 kilometres. Even after the opening phase the peloton remained nervous. The stage ultimately ended in a sprint with a reduced peloton. Roglic finished just outside the top ten in twelfth place.

Sports director Grischa Niermann saw how his team got away with it. “Primoz and Lennard are okay. Steven has a few scratches. There was not a lot we could do today. We fell over the men from Ineos. Luckily we got through and we can continue our journey in this Vuelta.”

"In the end, the upside is that we didn’t lose any time"

Koen Bouwman

Koen Bouwman experienced the crash from up close. “We were riding five hundred metres during a descent when almost our entire team crashed. Spain is characterised by slippery roads and I think there was some oil on the road. That was annoying, but luckily we returned with six men before the real descent started. Primoz and Steven crashed quite hard, but they are okay. In the end, the upside is that we didn’t lose any time.”
