No top result for Team Visma | Lease a Bike in fourth stage of Tour de Pologne

Despite a strong effort at the front of the race to set up a sprint, Team Visma | Lease a Bike came away without a top result on stage four of the Tour de Pologne. In a technical finale, neither Matthew Brennan nor Olav Kooij was able to contest the sprint.

The peloton rolled out from Rybnik for a 200 kilometre long stage featuring three categorised climbs. A group of three escapees quickly established a gap of around two minutes, but Steven Kruijswijk kept everything under control during the first 170 kilometres.

The biggest climb of the day didn’t create any important separation in the peloton that roared towards the local laps in Cieszyn, where the promise of cobbles, tight corners and an uphill finish caused the intensity to spike. The nature of the laps also made it hard for the peloton to close the gap to the breakaway, but everything came back together for the final kilometre.

On the uphill drag to the line, Matthew Brennan tried to move into position but his efforts were ultimately in vain. The stage was won by Paul Magnier.

”We tried to do the sprint for Olav, and we did well during the day", sports director Jesper Mørkøv reflected afterward. "We also hit the local laps in a fine position, but then everything turned very hectic. We lost each other before the sprint, and we didn’t have the right position in the last corner. Matthew and Olav were just a bit too far back. We shift our focus towards the remaining stages now."
