Second place for Vigié in Kreiz Breizh Féminin
Margaux Vigié was unable to reward her strong performance with victory in Kreiz Breizh Féminin. The 30-year-old Frenchwoman was riding at the front for a long time, but had to acknowledge Elisa Longo Borghini as her superior in the finale. For Vigié, it was her second podium spot of the season.
Eva van Agt, Femke de Vries, Sophie von Berswordt and Vigié took part in the seventh edition of the French one-day race on behalf of Team Visma | Lease a Bike. The yellow and black formation showed an attacking spirit on the 138-kilometre course and saw Vigié bridge the gap to the three leaders on the local circuit.
With four laps to go, the Frenchwoman saw her chance and rode away from her fellow escapees. Longo Borghini saw the danger and caught up with Vigié a lap later. The Italian then had the better legs and reached the finish solo. Vigié took second place behind her.
"I'm happy with my form after the altitude training I did."
"I'm happy with my form after the altitude training I did", Vigié said. "As a team, we were at the front all day and made sure that someone was always there when a strong group broke away. Unfortunately, I fell just short at the end, but I think I can be proud of the level I showed."
Vigié feels she has nothing to reproach herself for. "With four laps to go, I knew it was still a long way to the finish. Still, I dared to go solo, because when the leading group slows down a bit, you have to take your chance. When Elisa caught up, I knew I had already wasted a lot of energy and that it would be difficult to win. I tried to stay calm and follow as long as possible. Unfortunately, the race lasted ten kilometres too long."
