Strong performance in the final stage of the Coppi e Bartali takes Schiffer to fifth place in the general classification
Anton Schiffer crossed the finish line in ninth place in the final stage of the Coppi e Bartali. The 26-year-old German put on a strong performance on the final climb and secured fifth place in the general classification.
With the double ascent of Monte Stella, the riders faced a gruelling final stage. Five riders launched an attack shortly after the start and built up a maximum lead of five minutes over the peloton. In the run-up to the final climb, the pace was ramped up and the breakaway’s adventure came to an end.
Sven Mernik, Patryk Goszczurny and Elliot Rowe put Schiffer in a good position at the foot of Monte Stella, after which it was up to the German to let his legs do the talking. Mauro Schmid, Alan Hatherly and Axel Laurance ultimately proved too strong, but in the group behind them, Schiffer showed himself to be an promising climber.
"The way those four riders worked together is something to be proud of."
The German crossed the finish line in ninth place and moved up to fifth in the overall standings. "Anton put in a superb performance today. He rode a strong climb and rewarded himself with a fine top-five finish in the overall standings. We have to admit that Schmid, Hatherly and Laurance were just that bit stronger today, but nevertheless we can be proud of this result", sports director Robert Wagner said.
According to Wagner, the team can look back on the past five days with a positive feeling. "The way those four riders worked together is something to be proud of. Sven and Patryk did their job for Elliot and Anton today. Elliot reached his limit today, but that’s not a problem. For him, and for the other lads too, this was above all a journey of discovery. This week they’ve been able to experience what it’s like to ride at a higher level. All in all, we can head home with a positive feeling."
