Team Jumbo-Visma not unscathed through start of decisive week Vuelta

Team Jumbo-Visma not unscathed through start of decisive week Vuelta

Team Jumbo-Visma has experienced a difficult sixteenth stage of the Vuelta a España. Lennard Hofstede and Robert Gesink were involved in an early crash, but could continue their way. The sprinter teams controlled the day. As a result, the race ended in a bunch sprint. Primoz Roglic finished safely in the peloton and maintained his third place in the general classification.

Five riders made use of the chaotic start to break away. After that, things calmed down. Until twenty kilometres from the finish when a technical and nervous final started. The riders of Team Jumbo-Visma rode well grouped and didn’t get into any trouble. The leading group was caught up and Fabio Jakobsen won the bunch sprint.

"It could have been worse"

Grischa Niermann

Sports director Grischa Niermann looked back at the hectic start of the stage. “After three kilometres there was a big crash. Lennard and Robert were involved and Steven was stuck in the middle. He only had a broken bike and Lennard suffered some abrasions. It could have been worse. Every day is important, as we’ve seen again today. When UAE started to pull at the front of the peloton, Steven and Sam had to put efforts to get back. In the end, we were in the front and finished the stage well.”
