Van Aert close to stage win in first bunch sprint Tour de France

Van Aert close to stage win in first bunch sprint Tour de France

Wout van Aert finished fifth in the third stage of the Tour de France. The Jumbo-Visma rider was in an excellent position in the closing stages. He seemed to be on his way to a podium finish but lost momentum in the final metres as he rode very close to the fences. Jasper Philipsen won the stage.

After the Jumbo-Visma riders had stayed out of trouble all day, Christophe Laporte helped his teammate Van Aert to a good position in the final kilometre. "Christophe's work was excellent. As a result, I was positioned well. I tried to pass Philipsen on the right. Unfortunately, I lost top speed because Jasper and I touched each other and because I collided with the spectators on the side of the road", Van Aert analysed his sprint.

"Fortunately, I stayed in one piece"

The Belgian continued: "As a result, I couldn't finish my sprint and finished fifth. Fortunately, I stayed in one piece. That's the most important thing. My form is good. Tomorrow there will probably be another chance in a bunch sprint. Then, of course, I will try again."

Coach Merijn Zeeman did not want to mourn the result of the third day for too long. "Winning the stage would have been a bonus for us today. Wout was close, but unfortunately, it didn't worked out. The Tour is still long, and there are still plenty of opportunities. We were fighting for the win for the third consecutive day. That gives the team a lot of energy. If we keep it up, success will follow."
