Veenhoven sprints to fourth place in La Choralis Fourmies Féminine

Nienke Veenhoven finished fourth in La Choralis Fourmies Féminine. The French one-day race was decided in a bunch sprint, won by Lorena Wiebes.

Team Visma | Lease a Bike Women lined up with a young squad at the start of the sixth edition of the northern French race. The peloton covered 123 kilometres on the largely flat course in and around Fourmies.

Racing was aggressive from the start. Many riders tried to break away, but no move held. As in previous years, the peloton seemed determined to bring it down to a bunch sprint. In that sprint, Veenhoven was brought forward strongly by Imogen Wolff and Fem van Empel, who made her return to the peloton. Ultimately, Veenhoven only had to trail three riders. Victory went to Wiebes.

“It was an aggressive race, but as a team we were always well positioned,” Veenhoven said afterwards. “We reacted sharply to the accelerations, which allowed us to keep the race under control. In the finale the girls did an excellent job keeping me at the front. In the final kilometre I unfortunately made a small mistake, which meant I had to launch my sprint a little later. In the end I came close to the podium, but I can certainly be satisfied with fourth place.”
