Roglic retains maglia rosa in soaking wet Giro stage

Roglic retains maglia rosa in soaking wet Giro stage

Primoz Roglic has retained his pink leader’s jersey in the fifth stage of the Giro d’Italia. Despite the rain, the leading position of the Slovenian leader of Team Jumbo-Visma was never in danger.

Due to the heavy rainfall, the organisation decided, in consultation with the jury, to take the time differences for the GC at the first passage of the finish line in Terracina. Team Jumbo-Visma partially controlled the stage and brought Roglic to the finish line without any problems.

“On these wet roads, we constantly had to pay attention. But all in all it was a great day for us. We finished the stage without problems and we retained the maglia rosa. The organisation took the right decision. The Giro is still long and anything can happen.”

“It was a nasty day because of the cold and the rain”, Addie Engels explained. “Fortunately, it was only a short stage and from the start there was a stable situation with a leading group that got away. It could have been a lot worse. In the end we got through the day without any problems and we retained the maglia rosa. On days like today you can only lose. We were well positioned in the front and I think that’s where we need to be. The team did that very well. Despite the bad circumstances it all went well again.”
