De Vries, Bunel and Wolff savour historic Tour victory: 'Pauline has shown that dreams can come true'

De Vries, Bunel and Wolff savour historic Tour victory: 'Pauline has shown that dreams can come true'

With her overall victory in the Tour de France Femmes, Pauline Ferrand-Prévot fulfilled her own dream, but also her teammates'. Femke de Vries, Imogen Wolff and Marion Bunel look back with us on Ferrand-Prévot's historic victory, which gave Team Visma | Lease a Bike Women its first victory in a Grand Tour. "This is the icing on the cake."

Do you realise what has happened over the past few days?
Imogen: "No, not really. It's such a big deal in sport, it's almost impossible to imagine. When I open my phone and see the photos, all the wonderful memories come flooding back."

Femke: "I still can't believe we won the yellow jersey. We all knew Pauline was in great shape, but this was beyond everyone's expectations."

Marion: "I still feel like I'm dreaming. When I think back on the past few days, I wonder if it really happened. I need to let it all sink in."

Pauline said that a little girl's dream had come true. Do you feel the same way?
Femke: "In May 2024, I didn't even know if I would become a professional cyclist, and now I'm part of the winning Tour de France team. It's truly a dream come true. From the beginning of the year, the focus was on this goal, and we trained our hearts out to be in top form at the start. That it turned out this way couldn't be better. For me, this is the icing on the cake."

Marion: "I remember Rutger Tijssen (team manager) saying the day before the stage to the Col de la Madeleine: “We have to dare to dream big”. I'll try to remember that sentence forever. Because what he says is true: you have to dream big. Pauline has shown that dreams can come true."

Imogen: "Last year, I watched the Tour de France Femmes on television and never thought for a moment that I would be there myself a year later. It felt very far away at the time. It just shows how much can change in a year."

"This is what you dream of when you start cycling."

Femke de Vries

What was it like for you to witness such a historic achievement up close?
Femke: "Indescribable. This is what you dream of when you start cycling, that you can contribute to something like this. I always felt that I was at my best when supporting in the mountains, so I'm glad I was able to give Pauline some breathing space this week."

Imogen: "Very inspiring. I'm still young, but achievements like this inspire me to perform at the highest level one day. How Pauline – but also Marianne – set themselves a goal and prepare for it down to the last detail, I can learn a lot from that."

Marion: "I saw so many people crying. I think that says enough about what it means to everyone. I am grateful to be part of this team. I want to thank not only my teammates, but also the rest of the staff for a fantastic week."

How would you describe Pauline?
Marion: "Pauline always has a plan and wants to execute it as well as possible. She thinks everything through very carefully, wants to be well prepared for everything. She is focused, relaxed and wants to be in control. Thanks to her, I now know that dreams can be goals. If I say that I want to win the Tour de France Femmes one day, many people will say: you're too ambitious. But the first step is to believe in yourself. It's no coincidence that Pauline has such an impressive list of achievements. She doesn't listen to others, only to herself."

Imogen: "She is extremely focused, motivated and dedicated, but at the same time she is also funny, easygoing and relaxed. Pauline is a hero to many people in France. You can see the admiration everyone has for her, which is cool to see. To us, she is not Pauline Ferrand-Prévot, but just Pauline. She is a friend and teammate from whom I try to learn as much as possible."

Femke: "Pauline really has a killer mindset. When she sets her mind to something, she is capable of extraordinary things. She knows exactly what she wants. If she disagrees with something, she lets you know. She is a true leader. She expects the very best not only from herself, but also from us. Afterwards, she is very grateful to us for the work we have done for her."

You have trained together at altitude over the past few months. What was it like for you to train with her?
Femke: "I think that was the best part of the process for me. We talked about the mental aspect and how we were going to tackle the stages, but we also practised riding in the slipstream and sitting aerodynamically. Pauline always encouraged me and gave me a lot of confidence. On the last day of the training camp, I was completely exhausted, but luckily Pauline said that she had never trained so hard herself either."

Femke, you finished twentieth in the final classification. How do you look back on your own Tour?
"To be honest, I surprised myself a little bit. I felt great all week, but on the Col de la Madeleine I really surpassed myself. Although I wasn't riding for myself, it's still nice when you can keep up for so long and finish in the top twenty of the final classification."

Marion, you may have provided the decisive moment by piloting Pauline on the Col de la Madeleine. How was that for you?
"I wanted to use the stage to Madeleine to show what I can do and why I belong in this team. The plan was for me to slip into the breakaway and give the best support to Pauline on the climb. That plan worked out perfectly. I rode as fast as I could at the front, after which Pauline took off and gained a lot of time on her competitors. For me personally, that was the best moment of my life."

"I feel honoured and privileged to have had the opportunity to make my Tour-debut."

Imogen Wolff

Imogen, you were the youngest participant in the Tour de France Femmes. How did you experience it?
"I feel honoured and privileged to have had the opportunity to make my debut. I am extremely grateful to Team Visma | Lease a Bike for that. The Tour is so much bigger than all other races in every way. Everyone tells you that, but you only realise it when you're actually there. The speed is higher, the stages are tougher and everyone wants to be in the breakaway. It was a very educational experience for me. I'm super motivated to come back stronger next year."
