Media roundup: International media are at a loss for words for Vingegaard after completing historic trilogy

Jonas Vingegaard has etched his name into cycling history. The 29-year-old Dane completed the historic trilogy in Rome by also winning the Giro d'Italia. Following his two Tour de France victories and an earlier overall win in the Vuelta a España, the leader of Team Visma | Lease a Bike has once again written a remarkable new chapter, with international media responding in admiration to his performance and struggling to find words for his historic achievement, as this overview highlights.

Italian media

For three weeks, cycling fans across Italy showed why the sport holds such a special place in the country. Pink lined the roadside as the Italian media saw their dream winner emerge. "A championship-worthy victory," headlines La Gazzetta dello Sport, which also calls Vingegaard a "phenomenon of the sport" as attention turns to the completion of the historic trilogy.

Other Italian media are also full of praise for the Dane’s performance. "Jonas has written an indelible page in cycling history. He dominated the Giro d'Italia as a true champion," reflects the Italian news site tuttobiciweb.

Belgian media

In Belgium, praise for Vingegaard’s performance is just as glowing. "In a unique list with Merckx and six others: Jonas Vingegaard completes the trilogy with overall victory in the Giro," headlines Sporza, which further writes: "A company of greats has been expanded."

Het Laatste Nieuws also saw a dominant champion riding in the Giro d'Italia. "By far the best," reads the headline on the Belgian newspaper’s website, alongside a photo of Vingegaard. "He claimed his stage wins with overwhelming superiority and then gave a gift to his loyal lieutenant Sepp Kuss. ‘Winning together’ is what you call that," the news site concludes.

Dutch media

In the home country of Team Visma | Lease a Bike, Vingegaard’s overall victory also received plenty of attention. "Unassailable Giro winner Jonas Vingegaard among illustrious company," reads the sports section of De Telegraaf, which also notes that they have seen a rider who is "ready to take on the battle with Tadej Pogačar in the Tour de France."

De Volkskrant also highlighted the victory with a vivid anecdote: "As if a cheese slicer shaves off a little bit of form every day, that is what a three-week stage race feels like for many riders: legs getting a little worse each day. But not for Jonas Vingegaard. The Dane only grew stronger during the Giro d'Italia."

Spanish Media

In his quest to complete the trilogy, Vingegaard first stopped in Spain last summer to win the Vuelta a España. The Spanish newspaper El País takes a more poetic tone in its tribute to Vingegaard: "Jonas arrives in Rome and the city celebrates, with open arms and cheers that reach the heavens to welcome the new Giro d'Italia winner. The somewhat shy Dane shines in the Eternal City."

Danish media

In the home country of the Giro winner, they naturally could not be left behind. Ekstra Bladet features Vingegaard prominently on the front page of the newspaper. The Danish newspaper sees a Vingegaard who is in "top form heading into the Tour de France."

Meanwhile, the national sports broadcaster DR Sport headlines: "Is Vingegaard now the greatest Danish athlete of all time? Jonas has written himself into one of the most prestigious chapters of cycling history. An enormously impressive achievement."

American media

But it wasn’t only in Europe that attention was given to the victory of Jonas Vingegaard. In the United States, The New York Times published an article about the Giro victory of the 29-year-old Dane, stating: "Vingegaard fully lived up to his status as the top favourite. He dominated for three weeks straight and etched his name into an illustrious list by completing the historic trilogy."
