Vos sprints to fifth place but loses leader's jersey in second stage of Tour de France Femmes
Marianne Vos finished fifth in the second stage of the Tour de France Femmes. After a difficult final, the Team Visma | Lease a Bike rider had to acknowledge her superiority to Mavi Garcia, who narrowly stayed ahead of the peloton. Kim Le Court took over the leader's jersey from Vos, who still holds the points jersey.
With Vos in yellow, the peloton prepared for a 110-kilometre stage from Brest to Quimper. Team Visma | Lease a Bike once again set its sights on stage victory and helped ensure that the breakaway groups never got too far ahead. Vos, who impressively won the opening stage yesterday, and Pauline Ferrand-Prévot were part of a small group that entered the difficult finale.
Garcia saw her chance to attack and took a small lead. Led by Ferrand-Prévot, the chasing group seemed to be coming back, but Lorena Wiebes, Kim Le Court, Liane Lippert and Vos were too late. "Mavi did an incredibly strong attack. Behind her, there was a bit of despair, although everyone kept pushing hard on the final climb", Vos reflects of the final.
"Unfortunately, I was unable to ride another good sprint."
"Pauline was very alert and I moved up as well. Unfortunately, I noticed that there wasn't much left in the tank." Vos indicates that her teammates were once again of great value. "We knew it would be another tough day in Brittany. It was constantly up and down and fighting for your position. The team once again did a good job by controlling and positioning us well. Unfortunately, I was unable to ride another good sprint."
Ferrand-Prévot was once again among the strongest in the race. Her eighth place in the day's results moved her up to third place in the overall standings, behind Le Court and Vos. "Despite a hectic start, we got through the day well. My goal was not to lose any time today, and I certainly succeeded in that. It's a shame we couldn't quite make a bid for the stage win, but there will undoubtedly be more opportunities", the Frenchwoman said.
