Powless takes splendid seventh place in Volta ao Algarve

Neilson Powless has finished in seventh place in the overall classification of the Volta ao Algarve. In the tough final stage to the Alto do Malhao, Powless showed himself among the favourites on the final climb. He finished fifteenth in the stage and moved up to seventh place overall.

The stage evolved like any other with a traditional early breakaway. Team Jumbo-Visma’s Maarten Wynants was part of it. After the breakaway had been caught, Powless was well-surrounded by Wynants, Mike Teunissen and Amund Jansen.

Neilson Powless said it was mission accomplished. “Dylan won yesterday and I was able to reach seventh place in the overall standings. I was feeling better as the race went on. During the second stage, I had a tough day, but from the TT onwards, my legs were really good. I knew the finish was going to be tough today, but the team perfectly set me up for it. In the final three kilometres to the finish I gave it all I had and I was able to move up one more spot in the overall classification. I’m really happy with the way the week went, and I’m even more eager to put this experience to use.”

Sports director Grischa Niermann described the day as a good day. “Neilson rode a very good stage and moved up one place in the standings. So he did really well. Today we rode a tough stage and it went full throttle from the start. We are satisfied with a stage victory and a top ten place overall. In general, it was a very good day for Team Jumbo-Visma with a victory in the UAE Tour and a third place in the Ruta del Sol. It confirms that we are doing well and that we can move on to the spring classics with a good feeling.”
